January is Nationally recognized as Radon awareness month. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends having your home tested every two years to ensure that your family is not being exposed to unhealthy amounts of Radon gas. With the increased amount of time that people are now spending at home due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it is now more important than ever to test your home for Radon and ensure your family’s health and safety for years to come.

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally-occurring colorless and odorless, radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. Radon gas is produced as a result of the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. This gas finds its way into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation of the building. The only way to know if Radon is present in your home, office, or school is by testing for it. Axium Radon Mitigations is here to help!

Why Should You Be Concerned About Radon?

Breathing radon gas over time increases your risk of lung cancer. According to the EPA, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. The EPA estimates that about 21,000 people in the United States die each year from radon-related lung cancer. This number is significantly higher than the deaths caused by drunk driving, falls in the home or home fires.

What is considered to be a high level of radon?

The ideal level of radon inside of a building is 0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L. ) Living in the state of Colorado puts you at a higher risk of exposure to increased levels of radon. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, about half of all homes in Colorado have higher than the United States’ EPA’s deemed action level of 4 pCi/L. With more people working from home as a result of COVID-19, it is imperative to have your home tested to ensure that you and your loved ones are safe.
